Develop a Specialty
Once you finish your training, you may be tempted to identify as a travel agent who assists customers with all types of trips. However, it may be in your best interest to specialize in one or two areas. For example, if you know a lot about certain parts of the world like Asia, Europe, or the Caribbean Islands, you can list your knowledge on your website and attract more customers looking for a vacation in one of those areas. Having expert knowledge on certain types of vacations or destinations will also give you the advantage of trust. Once customers learn that you are a specialist, they may be more willing to take your advice on upgrades or hotel recommendations.
Give Them What They Want
Before you start trying to sell different vacation packages to your customers, take some time to understand what they do or do not want out of a vacation. You may even decide to schedule an initial consultation as a way to get to know your clients and find out what exactly they’re looking for. In addition to asking open-ended questions, there is a certain technique you can use that will help you ask the important questions without your client realizing it. For example, instead of asking your client if they want to upgrade their hotel room — and ultimately spend more money — lay out the options for them. Ask if they want the standard room or a room with a gorgeous view and a balcony with a hot tub instead. When you just ask your clients if they want to upgrade, they will most likely see only dollar signs. However, if you lay out the added amenities they will receive when they spend a little extra, they will imagine the impact it will make on the enjoyment of their vacation.
